The Bureau of Statistics proposes international standards for labour statistics; assists in the development of labour statistics in member States; and provides users worldwide with the most relevant labour statistics for as many countries as possible. Monitoring poverty initiated in 1970s. Several activities launched to help improve comparability of poverty statistics and develop simpler tools for rapid assessment of poverty changes.

Data Collection, Observation, Monitoring



Methodologies, Quality Control, Harmonization
Development of guidelines in consultation with national experts and social partners.
Improving poverty monitoring in the rural and urban sectors by examining the relevance and utility of indirect evidence. Developed using agricultural output, prices and wages used as proxy indicators in light of lack of data on annual household income and expenditure and out-of-date data from developing countries.


Assessment and Analysis
Rapid assessment methodology for measuring poverty using succint household questionnaires, cluster sampling of poor households, use of new computer technology and preparation of policy-oriented reports.
